What is a Windows VPS Hosting Account and How is it Different
When we mention Windows VPS we mean a Virtual Private Server that runs the operating system from Microsoft known as Windows Server. There are a number of different versions of Windows server in use today, some using less system resources than others. When we mention Linux VPS we mean any Linux based operating system running on a Virtual Private Server. Since there are far more flavors of Linux than Windows we won't go into too much detail on the different operating systems suffice it to say that the majority of them are free, with the exception of a few enterprise Linux distributions that come bundled with tech support (such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

Windows VPS Hosting is easier to use than Linux VPS

A common misconception is that the Windows VPS hosting plans are easier to use by people who have never used Linux or by people who don't know the Linux operating system. That may have been the case back in the late 1990s but these days if you know how to point and click and can fill out an online form you can use a Linux VPS hosting plan. They key thing to look for when selecting a plan is the type of control panel that is offered if any. The control panel is the interface that does all the behind the scenes work for you allowing you to just point and click to set up new websites and control your Virtual server.

Linux VPS's are Safer than Windows VPS's

Generally speaking a Linux web server may be less vulnerable to exploits than a Windows server, but from a security standpoint. Your website is far more vulnerable to exploits by what you place on your virtual private server. That is why managed hosting plans usually do not allow you to place anything on the server without the prior approval of the system administrators. If you install a copy of wordpress and  don't keep it up to date with security patches you may be exposed to a vulnerability over time, regardless of which operating system you choose.

Current realities of Windows VPS Hosting

currently the Windows operating system uses up more system resources in terms of server memory (link to server memory) than Linux. So all things being equal a Windows VPS account will cost a slight bit more than a Linux version. Generally this is more noticeable with entry level plans since a Linux VPS plan can get away with 256 MB or RAM but a Windows VPS plan will need more. However once you get into the medium level to high-end range of VPS hosting, the amount of memory required is negligible since you should be allotted a much more usable amount. And if you compare a Windows VPS hosting plan with a Linux plan that has a control panel installed then you are similarly on par since the control panel will use up some additional memory in Linux and typically there is a monthly licensing cost that may put the Linux plan on a similar price point than with a Windows plan that factors into the monthly cost the price of the Windows operating system. adsense 336x280
